What is a Breast Lift?
A Breast lift, also known as a breast mastopexy, repositions or “lifts” breasts that sag or have become stretched. This sagging usually results from pregnancy or a large weight gain or loss.
If you're unhappy with the look of your sagging breasts, Dr. H. Christopher Coley can help. Using the latest techniques, he can transform your breasts, making them perkier and more youthful. An expert in his field, Breast Lift patients travel from Greensboro, Winston-Salem, Burlington and across North Carolina to visit Dr Coley. Contact Coley Cosmetic & Hand Surgery Center today to set up an individual consultation and find out how you can benefit from a breast lift in NC.
How is a Breast Lift Performed?
Breast lifts are usually performed under general anesthesia as an outpatient procedure. They normally take approximately one to two hours, depending on the degree of "lifting" required.
Incisions for this procedure are placed around the areola and, at times, on the underside of each breast. During surgery, excess skin is removed from around the areola and occasionally at the bottom of the breast. The skin is then rearranged to tighten the skin envelope. The nipple and areola are elevated to a more natural position.
Breast lifts are often done in combination with breast augmentation in order to achieve the most desirable effect.
Am I a Good Candidate for a Breast Lift?
As women, gravity is not our friend. If you find yourself suffering from sagging breasts due to age and gravity, you may be a good candidate for a breast lift.
Luckily, the mastopexy procedure is effective for women with both large and small breasts. However, smaller-breasted women may see longer-lasting results, as larger breasts naturally work against the changes made during the procedure. And if you are planning to become pregnant in the near future, you may want to delay your breast lift until after you're done breast feeding, as pregnancy can stretch the breast tissue and counter the benefits of your surgery.
What Kind of Post-Operative Breast Lift Care Can I Expect?
The breast lift procedure is well tolerated with only minor discomfort, including bruising, soreness and swelling. You'll be instructed to wear a surgical bra for a few days following surgery, and stitches will be removed gradually within a week or two.
Recovery time is short, and you should be back to work within a week and resuming full activity within a month. During this time, your doctor will instruct you to avoid heavy lifting or straining of any kind, as this increases pressure on the breast.
