Myth Busters: Laser Hair Removal

Often wonder when you should begin laser hair removal?

At Coley Cosmetic, we recommend beginning your laser treatments during the fall and winter months, when UV exposure is at its lowest. We also recommend a minimum of six to eight treatments to achieve the desired result of permanent hair reduction. Beginning your laser treatments during this time gives you approximately 35 weeks until Memorial Day weekend, the opening day of pool season!

How does sun exposure affect this procedure?

Effectiveness – Ideal candidates for laser hair removal are those patients with lighter skin and darker hair. Hair removal lasers emit a light at a specific wavelength that is known to be absorbed by the pigment (color) in the hair follicle — without damaging the surrounding skin. The light is converted to heat energy, which in turn disables the hair follicle so that it will not produce another hair. UV exposed skin is also affected by this technology, causing hyper (darkening of the skin) or hypo (loss of color) pigmentation.

Increased sensitivity – Laser treatments cause cellular changes to the skin that will look and feel like a sunburn. Exposing treated areas to harmful UV rays can further damage the skin. Reducing exposure to the sun and using sunscreen is recommended to help prevent further UV damage.
