What Is Breast Augmentation?

Am I a Good Candidate for Breast Augmentation?

Breast augmentation patients from Greensboro, Winston-Salem, and Burlington give many reasons for electing a mammoplasty procedure, including small or asymmetrical breasts, reduced firmness from aging, and reduced volume after breastfeeding. The best candidates for breast augmentation are healthy and emotionally stable women who understand the ins and outs of the procedure. Ideally, they should also maintain a healthy diet and regular exercise.

While breast implants are sure to enhance your appearance, it’s important to understand that they won’t completely alter it. Forming realistic expectations about your surgery is important before having the procedure.

How Is Breast Augmentation Performed?

In North Carolina, breast augmentation is a fairly routine procedure. Incisions for the implants can be made in the crease along the lower part of the breast, along the lower half of the skin around the areola, or in the armpit. After the incision is made, the implant is inserted and then adjusted to the ideal size and symmetry before the incision is closed.

Breast implants are typically placed in one of three primary positions, depending on the size and shape of the implant, the patient’s body frame and the amount of breast tissue, among other factors. The three positions include the following:

  • Subglandular (above the pectoral muscles)
  • Partial submuscular (partially behind the muscles)
  • Complete submuscular (completely behind the muscles)

You’ll want to discuss all of your options with your doctor before electing to undergo breast augmentation.

Saline vs. Silicone Breast Implants

Let’s discuss the pros and cons of saline and silicone breast implants.

Saline breast implants are inserted empty and filled with sterile saline (salt water), after they are positioned inside your body. Saline implants pose less of a health risk, since they are filled with a natural solution which will be absorbed in the body should your implants become damaged, or rupture. You must be over 18 years of age to receive saline breast implants.

Silicone breast implants are pre-filled with silicone gel, before being inserted into your body. While many women feel silicone implants look and feel more like natural breasts than saline, they pose more of a health risk if your implants become damaged or rupture. You must at least 22 years of age to receive silicone breast implants.

During your one-on-one consultation, Dr. Coley will discuss which option is best for you.

Breast Augmentation Recovery

Breast augmentation is performed under general anesthesia, and the recovery time varies according to the placement (submuscular or subglandular) of the breast implants and the amount of breast tissue the patient has prior to the procedure. Most patients tolerate the procedure with only moderate discomfort for a few days.

You can expect some bruising, soreness, and swelling of the breasts after surgery, and you’ll also be instructed to wear a surgical bra for a few days. Typically, patients are able to return to work within a week of surgery, and they can resume all their normal activities within a few weeks. Until then, heavy lifting or straining should be avoided.

Breast Augmentation FAQs

  • Which are the best implants for breasts?

There are 2 main types of implants; silicone filled implants and saline filled implants. Both are very safe. Both have warranties against rupture. A silicone implant feels more like a gummy bear and a saline implant feels like a water balloon. There are different styles of implants such as moderate profile, high profile, etc; these differences will be explained during your consultation.

  • When should my breast implants be replaced?

If your implant(s) have ruptured, they should be replaced. If you are not happy with the size, shape, or appearance, then you may improve the appearance of your breast(s) by replacing the implants. If your implants are older than ten years, then you may consider replacing your implants.

  • Do breast implants last a lifetime?

Breast implants over time may rupture. Generally, after 10 years, the rupture rate is slightly higher.

  • What size breast implant do I need?

This can be a challenging question, because breast size is affected by the chest wall, current breast tissue, and body shape. A certain volume implant will look differently based on these characteristics on different individuals. The best option is to use some tools given to you during the consultation (try on implants, breast implant simulator, experience of provider)
