Hair Loss in Women in Greensboro, NC

Genetics, hormones, age and many other factors play a role in contributing to hair loss in women. Coley Cosmetic & Hand Surgery Center offers treatment for female hair loss to the residents of Greensboro, Winston-Salem, Roanoke and other surrounding North Carolina communities.

What is Hair Loss in Women?

Female hair loss often occurs in more than one pattern, unlike male pattern hair loss. Since these patterns are less recognizable, self-diagnosis is often ineffective. There are many factors that can contribute to temporary hair loss such as pregnancy or illness. It can be difficult to distinguish between the beginning of hair loss and temporary hair thinning.

What Causes Hair Loss in Women?

The most common cause of scalp hair loss in women is androgenetic alopecia. Androgenetic alopecia is genetically determined disorder characterized by the gradual conversion of terminal hairs into vellus hairs due to increased androgen production.

Vellus hair is thin, short, and barely noticeable. Androgenetic alopecia can start as early as a person’s teens and cases become more common with age. Though androgenetic alopecia is the most common cause of hair loss, women usually do not develop true baldness in the same patterns as men. Other causes of female hair loss include:

  • Telogen Effluvium – Hair loss caused when a large percentage of scalp hairs shed due to factors such as drugs, stress, or hormones.Female Hair Loss in Greensboro, NC
  • Scarring Alopecia – Hair loss caused by scaring in the scalp.
  • Alopecia Areata – An autoimmune disorder that causes patchy hair.
  • Trichotillomania – Hair loss caused by pulling (usually caused by ponytails, buns, etc.)
  • Triangular Alopecia – Hair loss that beings in childhood.

Androgenetic Alopecia in Women

Patterns of androgenetic alopecia in women can vary considerably from person to person. Patterns often include:

  • Thinning of hair over the entire scalp, with more noticeable thinning toward the back of the scalp
  • Thinning of hair over the entire scalp, with more noticeable thinning toward the front of the scalp that doesn’t affect the frontal hairline
  • Thinning of hair over the entire scalp, with more noticeable thinning toward the front of the scalp that does affect the frontal hairline

Androgenetic alopecia in women also does not uniformly grow smaller in diameter as in men. Women experiencing hair loss tend to have miniaturizing hairs of varying diameters across all areas of the scalp. Female pattern hair loss can also begin in the late teens to early 20s for women who experienced puberty early.

How Can Hair Loss in Women Be Treated?

At Coley Cosmetic & Hand Surgery Center we offer NeoGraft®, an automated hair transplantation system. NeoGraft® can be used to treat hair loss or hair thinning in both men and women. The procedure is virtually painless and leaves no scar, so it will not be noticeable that you’ve had a hair transplant.
