What is the Thyroid Gland?

The thyroid is a human gland located in the throat. This gland is responsible for the production of thyroid hormones, which help the body metabolize energy, regulate body temperature and support the normal function of the brain, heart, muscles and other organs.

What is Hypothyroidism?

Hypothyroidism refers to a condition in which patients have too little thyroid hormone in the bloodstream, caused by an underactive thyroid gland that does not produce sufficient amounts of thyroid hormone to keep the body healthy. Common causes of hypothyroidism include genetics, autoimmune conditions, surgical removal of the thyroid and radiation treatment. The aging process also affects thyroid hormones, and environmental and lifestyle factors can also affect the health and function of the thyroid gland.

Thyroid Hormone

Thyroid hormone is a metabolic hormone secreted by the thyroid gland.  It regulates temperature, metabolism, and cerebral function, which results in increased energy, temperature and warmth.  It increases fat breakdown resulting in weight loss as well as lower cholesterol.  It protects against cardiovascular disease by lowering cholesterol.  It relieves symptoms of thin, sparse hair, dry skin, and thin nails.

People who suffer from low thyroid function tend to experience fatigue and low energy, depressed cognition, forgetfulness, even depression, among other symptoms.  Research has shown that improving thyroid levels will alleviate many of the symptoms of thyroid insufficiency.

Replacing thyroid hormone levels in the optimal range instead of a normal level is the best way to improve how one feels and functions.  Thyroid replacement, however, is not all the same!  The “standard “ synthetic thyroid hormone prescribed by many physicians, may not be as effective as a natural bioidentical form.  A natural or bioidentical form of thyroid hormone is recommended.

Thin hair, brittle nails, dry skin are all related to low thyroid, among many of the other symptoms.  Many women are told that nothing can be done as their levels are normal.  Optimizing thyroid hormone levels, however, may reverse these changes.
