Male pattern baldness is the most common cause of hair loss in men. Fortunately, in most cases the condition is treatable. What is Male Pattern Baldness?

Androgenetic alopecia, also known as male pattern baldness, is the most common type of hair loss in men. More than half of all men will develop some form of male pattern baldness by the time they turn 50 years old. Androgenetic alopecia is a genetically determined disorder characterized by the gradual conversion of terminal hairs into vellus hairs due to increased androgen production.

As these terminal hairs turn to vellus hairs, they become thin, short, and barely noticeable. Male pattern hair loss is an inherited condition and characterized by a receding hairline and/or hair loss at the top and front of the head.

What Factors Contribute to Male Pattern Baldness?

There are three main factors that contribute to male pattern baldness. Though men’s hair begins to naturally thin out soon after puberty, these factors increase the likelihood and severity of male pattern baldness:

  • Genes – Male pattern baldness is inherited genetically from one’s parents, however; it is not certain as to how these genes are passed on. It is possible to be a carrier of baldness genes and not suffer from baldness.
  • Hormones – The severity of male pattern baldness is determined by sensitivity to the effects of dihydrotestosterone, or DHT in some areas of the scalp. DHT is a hormone related to testosterone that is created when testosterone reacts with an enzyme called 5 alpha-reductase.
  • Time/Age – DHT effects hair follicles over time and the body’s sensitivity to the hormone will affect the total hair loss. The levels of DHT present, how your genes react to it, and your age all contribute to your balding rate.
