What Is a Breast Lift?
A breast lift, also known as a breast mastopexy, repositions or “lifts” breasts that sag or have become stretched. This sagging usually results from pregnancy or a large weight gain or loss.
If you’re unhappy with the look of your sagging breasts, Dr. H. Christopher Coley can help. Using the latest techniques, he can transform your breasts, making them perkier and more youthful. An expert in his field, breast lift patients travel from Greensboro, Winston-Salem, Burlington, and across North Carolina to visit Dr. Coley. Contact Coley Cosmetic & Hand Surgery Center today to set up an individual consultation and find out how you can benefit from a breast lift in North Carolina.
How Is a Breast Lift Performed?
Breast lifts are usually performed under general anesthesia as an outpatient procedure. They normally take approximately one to two hours, depending on the degree of “lifting” required.
Incisions for this procedure are placed around the areola and, at times, on the underside of each breast. During surgery, excess skin is removed from around the areola and occasionally at the bottom of the breast. The skin is then rearranged to tighten the skin envelope. The nipple and areola are elevated to a more natural position.
Breast lifts are often done in combination with breast augmentation to achieve the most desirable effect.
Am I a Good Candidate for a Breast Lift?
If you find yourself suffering from sagging breasts due to age and gravity, you may be a good candidate for a breast lift.
The mastopexy procedure is effective for women with both large and small breasts. However, smaller-breasted women may see longer-lasting results, as larger breasts naturally work against the changes made during the procedure. And if you are planning to become pregnant in the near future, you may want to delay your breast lift until after you’re done breastfeeding, as it and pregnancy can stretch the breast tissue and counter the benefits of your surgery.
What Kind of Post-Operative Breast Lift Care Can I Expect?
The breast lift procedure is well tolerated with only minor discomfort, including bruising, soreness, and swelling. You’ll be instructed to wear a surgical bra for a few days following surgery, and stitches will be removed gradually within a week or two.
Recovery time is short, and you should be back to work within a week and resuming full activity within a month. During this time, your doctor will instruct you to avoid heavy lifting or straining of any kind, as this increases pressure on the breast.
What Are the Typical Results of a Breast Lift?
The results obtained with a breast lift are often remarkable, and patients are generally very satisfied with their new look. To see the type of results you can realistically expect following a breast lift, take a look at our breast lift before and after photos when you visit our Greensboro office.

Breast Lift FAQs
- How much does a breast lift cost?
A breast lift alone ( without an implant) costs $6500-$8000 including anesthesia and facility fees and post operative care.
- How do I determine if I need a breast lift or just an implant?
A breast lift is performed to reposition your nipple and areola above your natural breast fold and to center it on the chest above the breast gland. If your nipple position is hanging below your natural breast fold then most likely you need a lift. If your nipple position is above your natural breast fold, then you may only need a breast implant. These positions will be evaluated during your consultation.
- What are the incisions for breast lifts?
Most significant breast lifts require an incision around the areola ( many times making the areola smaller); an incision down the middle of the breast; and at times a small incision along the natural breast fold. All incisions heal and remodel for a year, so your scars will be visible for several months. Your scars are evaluated and monitored frequently to ensure the best scar. Scar prevention gel and sheeting, lasers, steroid injections, and even scar revisions may be used to give the best outcome.
