Best Ways to Prevent Aging of the Face

The best way to control facial aging is prevention.  Good facial hygiene, starting early with good skin care and sun avoidance and regular protection are key.   If acne is a problem, then aggressive treatment of this with skin procedures such as Microdermabrasions, peels, and a consistent cleansing skin care system will minimize permanent scarring.   As the inevitable aging changes begin to occur, incorporating smaller procedures (Botox, Fillers, lasers and peels) are needed to help renew the skin and restore volume loss. These are the next steps in keeping your face looking good, as well as continued protection from the sun.  As more advanced aging changes occur, an eye lift, brow lift or a face lift may be needed to reverse the aging changes.  Deeper peels and lasers may also play a role at this stage. Remove Excess Fat with Liposuction

Liposuction is a very popular procedure to remove excess subcutaneous fat. It can be performed just about anywhere on the body.  It is generally performed with sedation.  Fluid (tumescent fluid) is instilled into the tissues, this expands the fat cells, and reduces bruising.  Liposuction is performed through several small holes in the skin about the size of a pencil eraser.   These holes are placed where they are difficult to see, such as inside the belly button, low in the pubic area or beneath the panty line on each side.  With different sized cannulas, the fat is removed and the area is sculpted to a nice shape.  Some areas respond better than others.  If loose skin is not an issue, then liposuction can give amazing results that can be permanent.   Usually a compression garment is worn post-operatively to help with swelling.

If surgery is something that a patient does not desire, then CoolSculpting may be an option!  CoolSculpting removes unwanted excess fat without surgery by freezing it.  Schedule your consult to learn which procedure is right for you!

Top 5 Cosmetic Surgeries

The top 5 cosmetic surgeries performed at Coley Cosmetic are Breast Augmentation, Abdominoplasty (Tummy Tuck), Breast Lift, Liposuction, and Facial surgery (eyes, neck and face).  Breast augmentation and augmentation/lifts may be performed with saline or silicone (gel) implants.  Placement of the implants is determined at the time of consultation, either below or on top of the pectoralis muscle.  If your desire is to decrease the size of the breast, then a lift only may be performed.  Additionally, incision placement is discussed.  This is a concern for many women as they want as few incisions as possible.  The implants used have a life time warranty.  Dr. Coley will discuss the pros and cons of each to help you achieve the look that you want.

Tummy tucks and liposuction are also very common surgeries performed which can give life changing results.  Liposuction can be performed on just about any area of the body.  Results may be seen early post-operatively and are long lasting.

Facial surgery can be anything from an upper eyelid lift to a combined face, neck, and brow lift.  Most facial procedures these days are accompanied with other smaller procedures to really improve the final result.  For example, adding some fat transfer to restore volume loss and or a peel or laser resurfacing can add a finishing touch.  Dr. Coley analyzes the facial structure and aging changes and will recommend the best route for your individual needs!

How do I know if I need a Tummy Tuck?

Greensboro Tummy Tuck Before After.pngDo I need a Tummy Tuck?  If your problem is excess skin and stretch marks on your lower abdomen, then you may be a good candidate for a Tummy Tuck.  A Tummy Tuck removes excess stretch marks, fat and loose skin from the belly button down.  During this procedure the abdominal muscles are tightened, giving patients an “internal corset” to flatten the abdomen and create a more curvy figure. Liposuction on the other hand only removes excess subcutaneous fat, and relies on the skin’s ability to contract.  Thus, if one has a significant amount of loose skin, it is unrealistic that it will all contract with solely liposuction.   Depending on the excess skin, a “full” or “half” tummy tuck may be required.  Dr. Coley will recommend what is in your best interest to achieve the best contour!  Look at this before and after picture at some of these amazing transformations!  Notice 1) How low the scars are easily covered up, and 2) the belly button is a nice small contour, not a big ugly scar.  If your main concern does not involve excess, loose skin, then another option like liposuction or CoolSculpting may be better suited for you. Botox is also an effective treatment for wrinkles in the upper face to treat the crows feet, and also in-between the brows and forehead.

Myth Busters: Laser Hair Removal

Often wonder when you should begin laser hair removal?

At Coley Cosmetic, we recommend beginning your laser treatments during the fall and winter months, when UV exposure is at its lowest. We also recommend a minimum of six to eight treatments to achieve the desired result of permanent hair reduction. Beginning your laser treatments during this time gives you approximately 35 weeks until Memorial Day weekend, the opening day of pool season!

How does sun exposure affect this procedure?

Effectiveness – Ideal candidates for laser hair removal are those patients with lighter skin and darker hair. Hair removal lasers emit a light at a specific wavelength that is known to be absorbed by the pigment (color) in the hair follicle — without damaging the surrounding skin. The light is converted to heat energy, which in turn disables the hair follicle so that it will not produce another hair. UV exposed skin is also affected by this technology, causing hyper (darkening of the skin) or hypo (loss of color) pigmentation.

Increased sensitivity – Laser treatments cause cellular changes to the skin that will look and feel like a sunburn. Exposing treated areas to harmful UV rays can further damage the skin. Reducing exposure to the sun and using sunscreen is recommended to help prevent further UV damage.
